Arthritis swelling is one of the most common symptoms of both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. The swelling often comes and goes but if it’s not treated, then you may have more pain and less joint function as a result.
Often the reason joints swell is because they are weak and not stable and of course stiffness and pain also becomes worse. To combat this, you can use braces that are specially made to support joints. There are two types: one brace helps to shift the weight away from the affected portion of the joint and the other brace helps support the entire joint. You doctor can certainly advise you on this.
On the other hand, hot or cold packs help to alleviate the pain. It depends on you and the type of arthritis whether hot or cold is better for you. Some people respond well to an ice pack to relieve their pain and swelling whereas hot packs may aggravate the condition in others. Don’t use cold packs if you have any problems with circulation. Again your doctor can give you good advice on this matter.
When your joints are swollen, exercise doesn’t seem like a great idea but it is exactly what is good for your joints. So give it a try. If you don’t exercise then your joints and muscles surrounding them become weaker and weaker. An exercise plan should include flexibility (yoga is great for this), strengthening exercises, range of motion exercises and of course aerobic. If this is too much to think about, then consider a gentle yoga class to start and see where you want to go from there. Doing something is far better than doing nothing.
There are also drugs to combat arthritis swelling. Go and visit your doctor to see what he recommends and if you start taking a new drug, then please track your progress and it’s really important. What works for one person doesn’t for another, etc.
Another good thing to do is to lose excess pounds if you are overweight. The more you weigh puts more pressure on your joints.
With your doctor’s guidance, try some of these tips and see what works for you. Arthritis swelling can be daunting but there are ways to reduce your pain and swollen joints.
