We all love our pets. When they are happy we are happy. When they get older, just like humans, they slow down and are often prone to arthritis. There are several forms of pet arthritis treatment. Some veterinarians describe it as degenerative joint disease.

In dogs, it is often the hips and back legs that get arthritis and this particularly in larger dogs like Labradors, golden retrievers, etc. Cats unfortunately can suffer too when they get older. It’s not fun for them. Dogs love to go where their human companions go, and going upstairs or up and down from couches can become a problem. The same with cats, who especially love higher places. Many a caring cat owner has bought steps to help their cat manage to get to their favorite places.

The first step would be to visit your veterinarian to get your pet diagnosed. You can ask all the questions you need to know about the ongoing care of your pet and your veterinarian can prescribe a course of treatment. He or she will be very knowledgeable about arthritis in pets as this is becoming more prevalent every day. Just like us, pets do best with natural medicine.

If you want to look for products yourself, here are some tips.

While there is no cure for arthritis, glucosamine could help your pet. Glucosamine is a natural compound that is found in healthy cartilage as well as in crustaceans and anthropods. It is one of the most copious monosaccharides. In the United States it is a very popular dietary supplement which is not a vitamin or a mineral. It is often used in the treatment of arthritis for both humans and animals. It sometimes comes with Chondroitin and/or MSM.

Glucosamine comes in both liquid and pill form. We humans tend to go for the pills but the liquid variety is excellent for our pet friends as it is easy to swallow and administer. Also the liquid is absorbed by the body s soon as it enters the stomach, whereas with the pills they could pass right through the digestive system with no effect. Yes, the pills and capsules might cost less, but for our pets the liquid is not only better, but it absorbed more efficiently. Many pet owners simply pour the glucosamine over food.

When you go shopping for glucosamine, you will find many products in the marketplace to choose from. Make sure to look for products that are made in a facility with good manufacturing practices (GMP) to be assured that the products undergo strict quality controls and are true to the ingredients on the label.

You could also consider products that also contain MSM, chrondroitin and Omega fatty acids. Other common ingredients include boswellia, bromelain and yucca root which are known for their anti-inflammatory qualities as well as vitamins A, C and E. Your choice could be more limited if you go with a liquid but there are still lots of products that can help your pet.

Your pet takes care of you in so many ways, particularly emotionally. Be good to your pet. Observe his or her behavior and if you think pet arthritis treatment should be considered, make an appointment with your veterinarian and get some good advice.

Following my recent post “Does Your Cat Have Cat Arthritis?” I have now found an interesting youtube video specifically about cat arthritis from a veterinarian who gives helpful advice as well as recommending Cosequin as a source of chondroitin sulfate to help ease joint pain. My cat is fifteen and a half and I’m considering this option, after I talk to our veterinarian.

Here is the video – it’s quite short but full of good information:

Well it’s similar to us humans. Arthritis is usually found in older or even geriatric cats. It can be found in younger cats, but that’s not so common. Again similar to humans.

Still, whoever has arthritis, is not exactly going for a joy ride and there are steps you can take to make sure your cat remains healthy and will possibly bypass this chronic and painful disease.

If your feline friend does develop arthritis, it could be one of several forms. Osteoarthritis is a result of wear and tear on the bones, just as you would suspect when getting older. The shoulders and leg joints are often targeted. Polyarthritis affects more joints at the same time. The cartilage is gradually eroded and the bones do not have the flexibility anymore and movement becomes painful as the bones do not have the usual thick layer of cartilage in between them. Traumatic arthritis is the result of an injury to the joint. Although cats are usually very agile, they can sometimes hurt themselves when they jump or get into an accident or even fights. The joint can be injured and this could develop into arthritis.

Unfortunately cats cannot speak to us in words and so we usually observe that they might be having problems with movement. Just like us their joints become stiff and you can see that. Also jumping might become a problem. Also, if you touch a sore spot they will shy away from you. Although cats usually sleep 16 out of the 24 hours of the day and then spend quite a time grooming themselves, you might also find that your cat is sleeping even more and also reluctant to play and may become irritable because of the constant aches and pain.

Still, just as we age, when your cat gets older, he and she may stop jumping, have difficulty getting upstairs, or on his or her favorite places. His movements become slower and you can almost see him/her walking with some pain.

What can you do? Well, the first step would be to visit your veterinarian who can do some tests to determine if your cat does have this disease. There are arthritis medication that is available such as NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which can help reduce inflammation and therefore also reduce pain.

It is also important to make sure your cat gets enough exercise and is not overfed. Overweight cats are more prone to this disease as the weight bears down on their joints.

If you have arthritis, no doubt you have tried many things to reduce your chronic pain. There is a lot to choose from – medications from your pharmacy or doctor, natural remedies including essential oils, herbal remedies, remedies that have been passed down for centuries like apple cider vinegar and honey or cinnamon and honey but there are also homeopathic remedies for arthritis that you may want to check out.

Although homeopathy has a very broad range of remedies for many ailments, there are four specific ones that could be helpful for arthritis pain. Not a lot of people think of homeopathy when it comes to arthritis, but really it could help a lot. Here are four remedies in alphabetical order:

Apis:

Specifically Apis melifica is made from honeybees, including their venom and stinger. This homeopathic remedy alleviates pain and swelling, as well as burning sensations, which is why it can be helpful with people who have arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and suffer from hot, burning, stinging pain and from swelling and associated tenderness in their joints. The good news is that this can reduce stiffness and pain from hands and knee areas, for example.

Belladonna:

This herb is also called ‘deadly nightshade’. When belladonna is used for homeopathy, it is good for arthritis pain when the pain comes suddenly, often followed by throbbing and some swelling. If the pain is intense, then try belladonna – for example if joints are knocked or jarred and pain is the result.

Bryonia:

This remedy can be used if joints are swollen and also hot and these areas are painful when touched. Also if a tearing pain results when there is just a slight movement. So basically when arthritis is very painful and localized and movement causes pain.

Rhus Toxicodendron (also known as Rhus Tox):

If your arthritis pain worsens as night approaches and also in the morning when you awaken, rhus toxicodendron is the remedy to use. Your arthritis may get worse when the weather is cold and damp and therefore relief comes with warmth and movement helps as well. Another indicator for this remedy is when your joints get hot and painful with swelling and stiffness.

You should also know that homeopathic remedies come in various potencies – usually ending with an X, such as 6X or 30X. The remedies themselves come in the form of tiny pills or pellets which should be dissolved under the tongue.

It is best to visit a homeopathic doctor who can advise you and monitor your treatment.

In general, diet is not considered to have any lasting effects on arthritis and joint swelling. However, alternative medicine has another take on this. People suffering from this disease can benefit from having a more alkaline diet.

What does that mean? Well coffee, red meats, cheese, for example have an acidic effect on the body. It has long been acknowledged that if our bodies are in an alkaline state, disease has little chance of taking effect. Therefore many people who stop drinking coffee and reducing meat, fish and dairy consumption often benefit from have fewer arthritis flare ups and even some pain goes away.

Recently milk and dairy products in general have been linked to arthritis pain. We are the only species on the planet who drink milk from another species after babyhood. Cow milk is meant for calves. However, we have made a huge industry using cows and artificially inseminating them constantly so they will be in a constant state of lactation. Just ask a mother how she would feel producing milk and having a machine suck it out of her system on a daily, monthly and yearly basis? No, it isn’t natural.

Not only are we encouraged to drink our milk, but there is a huge range of milk products, many including artificial sweeteners. At our huge supermarket, I can only find one brand of sour milk that only has milk and bacterial culture. All other brands have added emulsifiers/thickeners like gelatin, guargam and carrageen. Many cheeses also contain artificial flavorings and colorings.

But back to the cows. These cows are usually fed grain products so they can mature faster. This can include corn and soy (genetically modified), antibiotics and a plethora of other ingredients that cows naturally do not have.

Therefore it is no wonder that milk and dairy won’t be the best for your body, especially if you have a chronic disease like arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, according to research, countries who have the highest rate of osteoporosis are those where dairy products are consumed the most!

If you do have arthritis in any form or joint swelling then consider giving up dairy for say two months and you will be able to see for yourself whether your arthritis symptoms have improved, got worse or stayed the same. I would encourage you to do this and also experiment with any other foods you think may affect you adversely.

If you do have arthritis, Exomine is a natural health remedy that can help relieve arthritis pain. For more details about this natural supplement for arthritis pain relief Exomine Click Here

There isn’t one body part that is as important in our everyday life than our hands and fingers. They do myriad functions for us every minute of every day – in fact they are often only at rest at night when we sleep.

If your hands and fingers become sore or stiff, you could have arthritis – especially if this doesn’t go away.

My mother suffered with arthritis and especially in her hands, I saw her struggle daily to do the most inane chores. Turning the doorknob, tying my shoe laces, lifting a pan or simply holding a book caused her pain. As I grew older, I saw her hands become deformed.

Today there are more options for people with arthritis in their hands. Some things are still used, however. She was taken to hospital twice a week (we didn’t have a car then – like most people) in the ambulance for paraffin treatment and this is still done today. However you can get packs of paraffin so you can do the treatment more conveniently at home. This treatment relieves the pain and stiffness for a while so it is definitely worth doing.

Another thing that didn’t change was exercise. She was encouraged to use her hands as much as possible and do certain exercises for them, even though they were painful. Exercise today is still an important part of treatment as it helps to keep your hands and fingers flexible and builds strength.

If you believe you have arthritis in your hands, go visit your doctor so he can do tests to find out and then prescribe medication to help you. It is also important that you let him know everything you are doing to alleviate your pain and your symptoms, even if these are natural remedies. It is important to work with your doctor on this so he needs to know all the facts.

Although many of us humans have arthritis and all the chronic pain and trauma that goes with it, it can equally affect our pets. Just like us, as pets age, they get slower, sleep more and they could be a victim to this insidious disease. Older cats are prone to it. The larger the dog breed, the more likely they are to get it, but it can affect smaller breeds too.

First of all, how do you know if your beloved pet is suffering from arthritis? If you know your pet well, and of course you do, you will notice that something is out of balance. Then you observe him or her well. The signs could be that getting up or settling down seems to be causing problems, excessive sleep (mind you cats, for example, sleep away most of the day as it is). Also favoring one limb over another could be a sign. Being less alert as though their attention is on something internal. The next step would be to visit your veterinarian. He or she will check out the animal and look for obvious signs. Just like us, pets can receive NSAIDs which are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Just like us, they can have problems with certain drugs, so if your pet is on NSAIDs, check carefully that they are doing him more good than harm. Your veterinarian will let you know what to look for.

Also, there are many supplements and natural remedies you cantry as well. Omega fatty acids are a good way to start, as well as vitamin C (do not choose the ascorbic acid variety as it may upset the animal’s stomach and it also has a strong taste – there are plenty of buffered varieties as well as a sodium ascorbate version). Vitamin C will help protect bones and tissues, thus hopefully preventing further deterioration. Homeopathic remedies can also work well.

Many people who have arthritis know, or friends and family have told them about the benefits of taking apple cider vinegar and honey. This is a powerful pain reliever as well as helping to detoxify the body. It’s also very simple to do. Just mix a tablespoonful of honey (the better the quality is obviously effective here and raw honey is recommended, organic if possible) and a tablespoonful good quality natural apple cidervinegar together and dissolve in a glass of water. Take this twice a day for your arthritis or, if you have pain during the day, take another glass.

However, there is another natural remedy that fewer people know about and that is honey and cinnamon. It works in much the same way as the apple cider vinegar and honey remedy. Again, use good quality honey and cinnamon from Ceylon is best. Put two tablespoons of honey with one tablespoon of cinnamon in a glass of warm water. It is best drunk in the morning on an empty stomach and again in the evening, or before bed if that is a better time for you and if your arthritis prevents a good night’s sleep.

You can even use the mixture with just a little water to form a paste and put on sore spots on your body. Just rub it in gently and people have reported a significant reduction in pain after only fifteen minutes or so.

Many people using cinnamon and honey who have arthritis report reduced pain and better flexibility. So it’s definitely worth a try.
There are other benefits to this drink as well:

It is good for your hair health and for bones and teeth. Take it to prevent or alleviate bad breath and it’s even good for toothache, which is great as toothache hits at all times and places and these two ingredients are in most people’s homes. Simply form a paste and rub it on the affected tooth.

It also helps with digestion, alleviating painful stomachaches, gas and flatulence. It can also improve bladder function.
It’s great if your skin is irritated or you have an itching problem. If you have pimples, put the paste on and see if they improve. Even if you have the flu or a cold, this simple remedy can help you. It’s also beneficial for your immune system.

These simple ingredients are easily available and are in most peoples’ kitchens anyway. Give this drink or the paste a try if you have arthritis. Many people have found this combination very helpful.

Arthritis is a chronic disease and one of the prime causes of disability in older people. Unfortunately, even teenagers can now experience arthritis.

There are many ways to get relief from the pain arthritis causes. Your doctor will be able to offer you a variety of medications and other beneficial resources. Unfortunately, these medications often come with side effects. This is why many people try natural and alternative treatments.

There are many herbal remedies for arthritis and one of the best ways to find them is to visit your local health food store, where you will be able to browse through their shelves and also ask questions. If you have found a product you think would help, you can always use the internet to do further research.

Simple treatments such as apple cider vinegar and honey can effectively reduce pain and thousands of arthritis sufferers take this on a daily basis because it helps them. Other remedies, such as molasses and even cinnamon can help.

Then there are bracelets and necklaces that have been touted as helping – ranging from copper to magnetic. Again, you can do research and always try it out to see if it helps you. You can find more information on the internet but also at your TV product store that is usually in your local mall. Here you can find out more information or even try on one of the bracelets that are sold on TV.

It might also be helpful to look at your diet. Often foods like tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini and eggplant are not friends with arthritis. Take one food you have often and omit it from your diet for a week or two and see if you feel better or not. White sugar and flour doesn’t do your body any good so it would be good to omit them from your diet. When your body is more alkaline than acidic, disease tends to have a hard time, so omitting acidic foods is a good thing. Take coffee, for example, which most people consume on a daily basis. It might not be good for you. Stop drinking it for a week or so and see if you feel better. If coffee isn’t a culprit, it is always wise to drink a big glass of water after your coffee so – that way it’s better for your digestion and flushes out the unwanted toxins.

There are many, many ways to get relief from arthritis using natural remedies.
