There are over one hundred different types of arthritis but the most common form of arthritis today is osteoarthritis, often called degenerative arthritis. This is a good name as this is due to the breakdown (degeneration) of the cartilage between the joints. The cartilage forms a cushion between our joints so they can move in harmony and without pain. The less cushion (cartilage), the more painful this form of arthritis can become. In fact the cartilage can totally disintegrate. To compensate for this the body often produces a new bone -
called bone spurs. Unfortunately this also causes pain.
This type of arthritis typically affects us as we get older and obviously have had a lot of wear and tear on our joints. The joints become still and painful and often appear larger. With this condition, normally you feel worse the more you use your joints throughout the day.
Unfortunately there is no cure for arthritis at the present time but there is a lot of medication out there that can help with pain management and some that helps to slow down the process of arthritis. Weight can be an issue. If people have a lot of excess weight, then this can put undue pressure on joints - especially the knees and hips - and arthritis can develop.
There are also many natural remedies on the market, both for pain relief (for example taking honey and vinegar regularly can help with pain) and taking some vitamins and minerals (for example, glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamins C and D) may help to prevent the rapid progression of degenerative arthritis.
